Geochemistry & Dragons by Dave Chalker

چکیده
Introduction Fantasy novels have existed for a long time, but came into prominence after J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. This series introduced many concepts into fantasy and created a genre sometimes known as “high fantasy.” Many novels are written in this mold every year, and in addition, people indulge in pretending they are a part of this kind of world through such role-playing games as Dungeons and Dragons. While it may not seem so at first glance, principles of Geochemistry and the Environment can be applied to such worlds, and in doing so, add an element of realism to the world in which one wants to become immersed in.

Statistical Issues in the Assessment of Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources
For Dave Wood Prior to his untimely death, my friend Dave Wood gave me wise counsel about how best to organize a paper describing uses of statistics in oil and gas exploration. A preliminary reconnaissance of the literature alerted me to the enormous range of topics that might be covered. Geology, geophysics with particular attention to seismology, geochemistry, petroleum engineering and petrol...
متن کاملInduction to inhalation anaesthesia in agamid lizards with alfaxalone
The aim of this study was to evaluate intravenous anaesthesia with alfaxalone for tracheal tube insertion in three species of agamid lizards. Alfaxalone, at a dose rate of 5 mg/kg, was administered intravenously to 80 inland bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps), 10 Rankin’s dragons (Pogona henrylawsoni) and 10 Chinese water dragons (Physignathus cocincinus) following 24 h of fasting. The righting...
متن کاملThe Footprints of Dragons
Almost all our early ancestors believed the earth was inhabited, especially in unknown regions, by dragons. Where did they get such an idea? Did it stem from a universal human imagination? An inherited need or instinct? An inherited subconscious memory of dinosaurs? All these suggestions have been made, and taken seriously by groups of people. I believe dragons are the reflection, sometimes emb...
متن کاملChalker-Coddington model described by an S-matrix with odd dimensions
The Chalker-Coddington network model is often used to describe the transport properties of quantum Hall systems. By adding an extra channel to this model, we introduce an asymmetric model with profoundly different transport properties. We present a numerical analysis of these transport properties and consider the relevance for realistic systems.
متن کاملAn In Situ Measurement System for Characterizing Orbital Debris
This paper presents the development of an in situ measurement system known as the Debris Resistive Acoustic Grid Orbital Navy/NASA Sensor (DRAGONS). The DRAGONS system is designed to detect impacts caused by particles ranging from 50 μm to 1 mm at both low-earth and geostationary orbits. DRAGONS utilizes a combination of low-cost sensor technologies to facilitate accurate measurements and appro...
